Thomas Levine
Associate Professor, Curriculum & Instruction
Thomas Levine is an associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at UConn’s Neag School of Education. Before working at UConn, Tom taught high school history for eight years, taught in China and Taiwan, and led professional development about groups traditionally left out of social studies curricula while working as an associate director at Primary Source, an educational non-profit. He earned a Ph.D. (Curriculum & Teacher Education) from Stanford in 2005. He has studied how teachers learn to enact practice in the context of pre-service teacher education coursework and in professional communities among in-service teachers. One of his current projects is exploring how pre-service teachers learn to teach linguistically-responsive inquiry-oriented social studies. For another project, he and Sara Harvel are collecting data from elementary social studies methods courses and instructors across the country to understand best practices, challenges, and content of such courses. Tom has taught social studies courses for elementary and secondary teachers, a doctoral seminar on teacher education, and seminars supporting teachers’ learning from their work in schools.
