Richard P. Hiskes

Professor Emeritus, Political Science & Human Rights


During his 35 years at UConn, Richard Hiskes was Associate Director of HRI and HRI’s Director of Undergraduate Programs.  A political theorist by training, his specialties were human rights theory, especially environmental and children’s rights.

Author of many articles and books, his 2010 Cambridge book, “The Human Right to a Green Future: Environmental Rights and Intergenerational Justice” won the Best Book in Human Rights award from the American Political Science Association (APSA).  His latest book, “Suffer the Children: A Theoretical Foundation for the Human Rights of the Child” (Oxford, 2022) earned “Honorable Mention” for the 2023 International Studies Association Best Book in Human Rights award.

Rich was also the first UConn Editor of the Journal of Human Rights, and in 2022 was named a Distinguished Scholar of Human Rights by the APSA.
