The Goražde Legacy-ICTY Pilot Collection

Introduction to the Goražde Legacy-ICTY Pilot Collection

The Goražde Legacy – ICTY Pilot Collection,  is a unique collaboration between the University of Connecticut Human Rights Dodd Impact Programs and the filmmakers of "UNCONQUERED: Goražde - City of Heroes," bringing together academia and filmography to preserve and illuminate the experiences of individuals impacted by the Bosnian War of 1992-1995, particularly during the siege of Goražde, a city on the banks of the Drina River in southeast Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Students, educators, and researchers will have access to invaluable educational resources through the Goražde Legacy – ICTY Pilot Collection. These archival resources will provide the opportunity for an immersive exploration into the many facets of the Bosnian conflict. Accessible within this digital archive will be firsthand testimonies, archival footage, trial records, and documentation sourced from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). The academic significance of this collection extends to enriching the experiences of students, educators, and scholars across various disciplines, including human rights, international law, media studies, and history.

About the Film

UNCONQUERED: Goražde, City of Heroes is the story of the unquenchable power of the human spirit, offering crucial lessons and hope. It tells the story of how ordinary townspeople withstood a three-and-a-half-year siege during the Bosnian War, threatening to destabilize the international world order.

Academic Connections: The Goražde Legacy-ICTY Pilot Collection

This forthcoming digital archive will incorporate interviews, footage, and still images from the acclaimed feature film documenting firsthand testimony of the Bosnian Serb attacks and occupation of Goražde during the Bosnian War between 1992-1995.

The pilot collection will enrich the existing ICTY Digital Archives by providing additional primary source materials that convey experiences during the prolonged siege of Goražde, including war crimes and post-conflict justice. The archive holds significant educational value for research purposes and will continue expanding through student multimedia projects and materials from the documentary’s production archive.

Initial research conducted by Nadan Hadzić and Aida Gradaščević combines ICTY trial exhibit documents from the Radovan Karadzić and Ratko Mladić trails at the ICTY. The collection is currently under construction, however, as a preview, we provide some key documents used in the Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić trials relating to crimes committed in Goražde. These exhibits align remarkably well with footage from the documentary film UNCONQUERED: Goražde, City of Heroes. The examples shown here illustrate the potential for these exhibits to significantly enhance and contextualize clips from the film once the full collection is complete.

UNCONQUERED: Goražde – City of Heroes Excerpt

"We have never had any breaks in work, we nurses and doctors. But generally, we could not treat [other] illnesses in hospitals. All hospital places were reserved for wounded people. Simply put, we never had an empty bed."

– Paša Musabašić, Head Nurse at Goražde Hospital
