Impact of Free Bikes for Schoolgirls in India

Nishith Prakash, Assistant Professor in Economics and Human Rights at UConn, has conducted an impact evaluation of a government program aimed at encouraging more girls to stay in school. The government of Bihar, northern India, is providing every schoolgirl aged 14 with a free bicycle. Professor Prakash and a colleague, Karthik Muralidharan (University of California, San Diego), estimate the impact of this policy on enrollment and learning outcomes. The project is funded by the International Growth Centre (IGC) at the London School of Economics and Political Science and is one their flagship projects.
